THE TEMPEST
by William Shakespeare
Directed by Jim Calder
Twelve years ago Prospero, the Duke of Milan, was overthrown by his brother, Antonio, with the help of Alonso, King of Naples, and the King’s brother Sebastian. Prospero and his baby daughter Miranda were put out to sea and they landed on a distant island. By the use of his magic art, Prospero now rules this island. The sprite Ariel and savage Caliban serve him.
Now a ship is caught in a violent storm, and Prospero tells Miranda that he conjured the storm because his mortal enemies are all on that ship. Castaways begin to turn up. First comes Alonso’s son Ferdinand, who immediately falls in love with Miranda. Prospero tests their love by enslaving Ferdinand. As the other castaways appear on the island, Prospero must decide if he will take revenge on his enemies, or conjure a happy ending instead.
