FRENCH CINEMATHEQUE: THE RIVER (1951)
Please join me at the Avon for March’s French Cinematheque: The River, co-presented by Alliance Française.
This is Director Jean Renoir’s entrancing first color feature—shot entirely on location in India in 1951 — a visual tour de force. Based on the novel by Rumer Godden, the film eloquently contrasts the growing pains of three young women with the immutability of the Bengal river around which their daily lives unfold.
Martin Scorsese considers THE RIVER to be the one of the most beautifully shot Technicolor films in history.
