Having been an art school student, I’ve always been of the belief that one never stops learning – whether we are pre-grad, post grad, or self-taught. “Student” is defined as “an attentive and systematic observer”. By definition, then, artists are always students, as we make observations of ourselves, about others and the world around us.
The exhibition Art Students League Revisited opened to the public on Thursday, May 3rd at Flinn Gallery at the Greenwich Library, in Greenwich, Connecticut. It is the last show in the Gallery’s 2017-18 season and it includes a variety of work by artists using a spectrum of mediums from alcohol ink to Italian marble. The artists are all affiliated with a well-respected institution in New York City, The Art Students League of New York – more about the League is below.
ART STUDENTS LEAGUE REVISITED
May 3 – June 14
Each of the artists in the Flinn Gallery exhibition have their own distinctive style: the exquisitely detailed and masterfully executed etchings by Jeff Atwood; the charming and closely observed studies of everyday objects in Thalia Chantziara’s work, the optically intense paintings by Rodolfo Edwards, and the large, painterly, nature-based compositions of Henry Finkelstein. Kathleen Gefell’s varying sizes of landscapes use layers of paint, some with an impasto technique; there are the mesmerizing and complex ink images of Sonomi Kobayashi; the rich, warm tones and engaging details of Will McDonough’s still life and bottle series, and the smooth, glossy refined forms carved from different types of marble, by Elisabeth Page Purcell.
The exhibition will be up one more month – through Wednesday, June 13. There will be an Artists Group Discussion on Sunday, May 20th at 2:00 pm in the Gallery, also Tax-Free Sales Day throughout the day (hours are 1-5pm on Sunday). Participating artists will be Rodolfo Edwards, Sonomi Kobayashi, Will McDonough and Elisabeth Page Purcell.
