The Holy Name – Art of the Gesù: Bernini and His Age opened at Fairfield University’s Art Museum on February 2nd. In this very special exhibition, commemorating the University’s 75th anniversary, are some exquisite works from the Gesù, the mother church of the order founded by Saint Ignatius Loyola and his companions, as well as other related works from the period, from major museums and private collections throughout the country.
According to Philippe de Montebello, the Honorary Chair of the Exhibition Committee, “the Gesu is one of the most visited churches in Rome, and for good reason. Renowned for its architecture, painting, sculpture and decoration, it is a crucible of art, ideas and faith.”
Besides this opportunity to see these magnificent works up-close, there is much history surrounding the exhibition, and the Museum has lined up several public lectures and programs for a more in-depth exploration of the art and music of the period, as well as the artists and specific works that are on display.
Below are some photos from the FUAM’s Bellarmine Hall Galleries, along with the schedule of talks, performances and programs. For complete information on Art of the Gesù: Bernini and His Age: fairfielduniversity.edu/museum.
